Farmers Express Frustration Over Uncertainty Surrounding 45Z

JOHNSTON, IOWA (January 10, 2025) — The Department of Treasury released more details today about a tax credit, known as 45Z, that is designed to help the biofuel industry make inroads into the aviation sector.

Although today's news provided additional details, leaders in the corn-growing community expressed the need for clearer guidelines regarding the specific environmental practices necessary to qualify for the credit.

"Iowa Corn Growers Association President Stu Swanson expressed his disappointment, stating, 'This news is disheartening for farmers. We have consistently pushed for transparent guidelines from Treasury officials, supplying them with the information required to move forward. Sadly, it seems our contributions have not been acknowledged, and now this matter will be handed over to the incoming administration.'"

The 45Z tax credit, included in the Inflation Reduction Act enacted in 2022, offers tax benefits to refineries that manufacture biofuels suitable for commercial aviation, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In May of the previous year, the US Department of Treasury issued its guidelines regarding eligibility for the credits. These guidelines raised concerns among growers, as they mandated the adoption of environmental practices that are not feasible in specific climatic conditions.

Leaders in the corn-growing industry have since supplied Treasury officials with data-backed insights as they updated the guidelines.
